Ron's View - Macon, Georgia
If you like your ballparks to be from a historic vintage, take a journey down to Macon's Luther Williams Field. Built in 1929, it sits within a group of buildings used for county fairs, as best I could surmise. The small town southern atmosphere permeates every brick in this little gem of a fun ballpark. Of course, it didn't hurt that "Rolling Rock" beer had a promotion that night. "Bucket O' Beer Night" it was called, or something like that. 4 bottles of 12 ouncers in a bucket filled with ice (the ice was important, as it kept the beers cold until we downed 'em). Even Scott and I can't drink beer fast enough in the heat of central Georgia to not need the ice. Anyhow, I also remember these 4 packs only costing about 6 bucks each, so needless to say it was a fun time.
Much later that evening, I was driving us back to our motel. Proceeding with my usual caution toward an intersection with a green light, I barely noticed a vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed from my left. He blasted through a red light, narrowly avoiding taking our rental car's front tires and engine with him. THEN I noticed that he didn't even have his headlights on!!!
Again, justice prevailed. The only other car in sight just happened to be one of Georgia's finest men in blue. He quickly took chase after this homicidal idiot. We arrived at the motel safely. I was still a bit shaken, but glad to be alive.
Dawn, or was it noon?, arrived. Time to get back on the road and get to Orlando, Florida. For baseball - none of that Mickey Mouse stuff.
